Members of a group in solidarity with Cuba, coming from the German region of North Rhine-Westphalia, visited “Martha Abreu“ Primary School in the city of Camaguey, to get familiar with the educational reality of this major island of the Caribbean.
The initiative was led by Spaniard, resident in Germany, Irene Guarino Rivas, professor of the Riesener Institute, in the city of Gladbeck, who teaches solidarity -among other subjects – for which they materialized a donation of school supplies to Camagueyan children.
Guarino Rivas noted that it is very important to emphasize the Latin American culture in Germany, where the educational systems of the region are treated. She also confessed that she always had the dream of visiting the Cuban educational centers, with the hope of helping the children of this island nation.
She explained how they could collect school supplies in Germany, and a Camagueyan gave them the idea of visiting this province and, especially, “Martha Abreu” School.
“It was apparently at random, but it bore fruits”, said Guarino Rivas, who added: „We are happy that the initiative resulted in this visit”.
“We like a lot this 496-years-old city, Camaguey really deserves the UNESCO designation as a World Heritage Site. It resembles Cadiz, my hometown in Spain, one of the oldest cities in Europe.
Aside from Irene Guarino Rivas, German Verena Klauker, who visits Cuba for a second time, also talked and shared moments with the pupils in the Camaguey-based school. (Aramís González Cruz, Translated by Gualveris Rosales Sanchez / Radio Cadena Agramonte).
